Orange County Friends Meeting Begins, 1970
Orange County Friends Meeting came into being on 21 February 1970, but the men and women who brought about that event had been preparing for at least five years.
As early as 1965 they had been met as a Worship Group under the care of La Jolla Friends Meeting, and called themselves the Harbor Area Friends Worship Group. Alex Price was their clerk. In July of 1967, members of the group come to believe that they could establish a regular meeting in Orange County, and made that intention known. ... [A] request to form a preparative meeting was approved by La Jolla Meeting on 20 August 1967
A few months later, on 20 October 1967, the minutes say “we discussed changing the name of our group to a more specific name. Orange County Friends Preparative Meeting was suggested,” (emphasis added). That same meeting approved a report from the nominating committee, naming Roland Schinzinger as clerk, Shirley Price as recording clerk, Jane Schinzinger as librarian, Diana Richardson as treasurer.
On 30 June 1969, this Preparative Meeting sent a letter to La Jolla meeting saying it was “united in the desire to take another step toward assuming responsibility for becoming a regularly constituted monthly meeting of Pacific Yearly Meeting.” A formal application was written on 21 November 1969, and on 16 January 1970 are reply from La Jolla was received approving this request. The next meeting for business, 21 February 1970, marks the beginning of Orange County Friends Meeting.
